Playhouses

The German-American Women's Club Hamburg e.V. (DAFC) was founded in 1951 by American and German women to help children during the difficult post-war years and to support families. Using DAFC funds, playhouses were built and donated to the city, which in return provided trained educators.

Currently, the DAFC financially supports and oversees seven playhouses, offering disadvantaged and underprivileged children in Hamburg a safe space where they can develop under competent guidance. The children receive a warm lunch, homework assistance, and educational and recreational activities.

The DAFC Hamburg provides a fixed monthly financial contribution and additionally funds special activities such as summer excursions and Christmas celebrations.

This year, for example, over 100 children and their caregivers enjoyed a trip to Hagenbeck Zoo, including lunch, ice cream, and lots of fun.

Ronald McDonald Houses

When a child becomes seriously ill or a newborn is born seriously ill, it is a serious disruption to normal family life associated with great stress, worry and anxiety.

In a Ronald McDonald House (RMD) run by McDonalds Children's Aid, parents and siblings of seriously ill children find a temporary home that gives them a sense of security and a little normality. The close proximity to the hospital allows them to save energy and be more rested and relaxed when caring for their sick child. The constant closeness to parents and siblings, who comfort, read to or are simply there, supports the healing process of the sick child. The closeness of the family helps!

Each family has an apartment with three to four beds and a bathroom.

We have taken on financial sponsorship for one apartment each at RMD Eppendorf and RMD Altona. In addition, we support the seriously ill children and their families with regular cooking evenings, where we prepare an evening meal for the parents/siblings living there temporarily and listen to the concerns of our “guests”. Our aim is to take a moment away from the worries and suffering and, if possible, to bring a little smile.
